If you are as intrigued by all this as I am, be sure you read my previous post, and then you may enjoy this video...Let me know what you think~

Let me hear from you! I'd love to know your theories...

Busy day of painting & a couple pics from Greece!

This is a cute little spot in an amazingly beautiful medieval town on Chios.  The town is Mesta, and if you get the chance....GO!  I did a quick drawing in pen of this site and can't wait to paint it!  I also completed an abstracted painting which I will photograph and share another day.

The decorations on this building are very typical of the designs found on all the buildings in the town of Mesta.  The symbols are made with a technique known as "Scraffito".  It's a technique used in painting too, where you scratch into the surface to reveal what lies below.  It's so beautiful and very ornate.  What a great stop!  While there I did another 2 drawings of scraffito covered buildings.  Such fun, but also such a challenge!  I kept having cars park right in front of my line of sight!

I am having some personal breakthroughs while here and just loving encountering the people of Greece on the streets.  They are so warm and friendly.  As we sit in front of their homes and paint, we are generally met with offers of water and sweets.  I have a great story about that I will share another day.  I can't say enough about painting plein air or out in the open while on vacation!!!  The people I'm meeting are amazing and we have so much in common.  We look at the world through the same lens.  We have writers and poets along with us, and we all share a common perspective. Artists are found in all realms.   What a treat...

Lost and Alone in a Foreign City- Learn from my Mistakes

It all began so innocently, we were to get off the bus in Mytilene, Greece on the island of Lesbos.  We were going to see a bit of the city for about 1/2 hour prior to catching our ferry to Chios around noon.  I was with the group and coming back soon to the same bus which had all my luggage.  I left my cell phone, which I always put in airplane mode anyway when I'm in Europe.  That way I don't get charged for incoming messages.  I had my passport, camera, cash, and credit cards with mee.  I was with our group of 25 and we began by setting out into the winding and crowded merchant section of town.

Immediately people began to dodge into bathrooms, stop at storefronts, and basically wander down the road together.  As is my habit, I began looking at the scene through my camera lens, and found lots of interesting subject matter all along the road.  I wasn't exactly sure of our destination, I didn't really care. That was my first mistake.

We approached an old abandoned and decayed mosque, and I heard from a friend that the interior was beautiful.  I was intrigued, and stepped onto a side street to get a better look.  I never went in, I just poked my camera through the windows.  What I saw was so engaging...abstract patterns of bricks, arches, steel rods, and soft light poking through sky holes here and there.  It was gorgeous and wanting to look at it from another angle I stepped around the side of the building without telling anyone.  That was my second mistake.

After getting some terrific shots for about 5 minutes, I came out on the street and didn't see anyone, so I continued going down the street in the same direction toward a church we had all been photographing.  I didn't see anyone in either direction, but I just figured I would see them around the next bend in the road.  I didn't.

I got to the church, and figured they might be inside...they weren't.  The church was at a fork in the road.  I went down the first fork for about 5-10 minutes...and began to panic.  Where were they??? It was such a big group, and how could I not see them???  My next thought was that they must have gone down the other fork in the road.   I began to jog.

When I got back to the church I checked inside again- nobody there.  I asked around but no one spoke English.  The other fork in the road was a possibility.   Time was not my friend at this point so I began to fun a little faster that way.

I traveled down that fork for about 5-10 minutes but it felt all wrong.  The street emptied out onto a large church and the harbor. There were buses there, but not mine.  No familiar faces.  How could this have happened?  Where were we supposed to meet?  I realized I didn't know.  What were the contact numbers for our tour guide?  I realized I didn't have them with me!  I left them in my backpack on the bus.  My options were limited and none of them were great.  How could I be so stupid??  I was definitely lost and alone.

I had my passport, my money, no phone, and no way to contact my group.  I did not know where exactly we were meeting our bus, although I did know where the bus had dropped us.  It was about 20 minutes away if I ran the whole way.  Perhaps that was where they were.  I could go back there, but I wasn't sure I could get a taxi in that location if I was wrong.  There also was the possibility that they might leave without me and try to find me later.  Where would they look for me?  Would it be best to stay where they last saw me?  I began to feel panic not only for me, but for the group, knowing that there would be an uproar when they realized I was missing.  I knew they would be terribly worried about what had become of me.

At that point I had been separated from the group for about 40 minutes and I didn't know exactly when the ferry left for Chios.  Given the deadline, and not knowing exactly where to meet them, I decided the best idea was to find my way to the ferry.  That was the one place I knew they would be.  It was the only certainty I really had.

I saw a number of taxis near the harbor when I had been there, so I decided to run there and grab a taxi  to the ferry...or ferries.  I wasn't sure whether there was more than one. Approaching the first cab driver I poked my head in the window and asked if her spoke English.  He answered,"Yes", so  I asked him when the next ferry was to Chios, and he said, "Tomorrow."  I knew that was wrong, so I told him," No, I need to go today.  When is the ferry today?"  He thought for a moment and then said,"Yes, there is a ferry in about 1 hour."  I asked him how much to go there, and it was only 3 Euros.  That was my first piece of good news...the low price told me I was close!

I got in the cab and asked him if there were any other ferries headed to Chios today.  He said, "No." but after his initial answer about the ferry schedule, I wasn't completely confident of his knowledge.  He dropped me and ran to the ticket counter...nobody was there.  Some sketchy characters were hanging around the ferry station and I decided I wasn't going to speak to them.  I rounded a corner and there was a group of ambulance personnel.  I asked if any of them spoke English.  They directed me to someone inside a trailer.

Inside the trailer, the man told me that the ferry was on it's way and would leave for Chios in about an hour.  I breathed a huge sigh of relief, and realized that I was probably not lost forever.  For better or for worse, I could get myself to Chios.  I didn't know the hotel name, but I figured that worst case, I could figure my situation out once I got there.  I went back a few times to my English speaking contact.  "Is there any other ferry leaving for Chios today?"  The answer was," Yes, there is another leaving at 8PM."  I knew that was not our ferry, so I figured I was in the right place.  Later on I asked," Do any other ferry lines operate a boat to Chios?"  He assured me that this was the ONLY boat bound for Chios leaving from Lesbos today.  That was when I finally relaxed and realized that all would be well.

It was also when I allowed myself to imagine how concerned and upsetting it must have been for all the rest of my group to have me go missing.  How could I have prevented this?  What were the lessons?
I had an hour to reflect, and this is what I came up with.  Maybe you can learn from my mistake.

If you're traveling abroad with a group on an excursion, here's advice I learned the hard way:
1. Always have your passport, money, credit card, and PHONE with you.
2.  Inside your passport or wallet, slip a list of contact numbers pertinent to your trip.  Think about adding the numbers into your phone contacts.  I have!
3.  Know where you are to meet before you start out. Write it down.
4.  Always tell someone where you are, even if you think they know.  Travel with a buddy if possible.
5.  Wear a watch so you can keep time.

The end of the story is happy.  My bus driver found me at the ferry, and telephoned the tour leaders to let them know my whereabouts.  My biggest regret is having inconvenienced and worried my fellow travelers, but they were  incredibly generous and supportive once they found out I was ok.  Their reaction was such a balm for my frazzled nerves.  I appreciate their support more than they will ever know. Hopefully, this post may help someone else avoid finding themselves in a similar situation.

We are safely arrived on Chios and I look forward to checking the island out tomorrow...

Artfully Tasteful Tour of Tuscany Fall 2014- Italian Encore!

What to do when you leave a little of your soul back in Tuscany?

Join Me for An Italian Encore!!

Our souls are not capable of moving quite as fast as we can move in the modern world...our souls move more slowly...

It seems that in our American culture we are rushing around, productive in every moment, multitasking our way through the day and in the process we have lost a little of that poetic sense of the romance in daily living.  What if our souls can’t move at the same speed as our bodies? Perhaps that is why so many of us are walking around feeling stressed and unfulfilled. Perhaps we can look to the Tuscan life style as a model for how to slow down and savor life.

Let's slow down and savor life the way they do in Tuscany...

Sometimes we need to distance ourselves from real life in order to gain perspective.  I have a definite change of perspective since going on this trip.  After my fourth trip to this region, I have come to the realization that I love the Tuscan lifestyle!  I love focusing on the meal at the end of the day, with an appreciation of the fresh food and great wines that this region has to offer.  It is a ritual means of punctuating the day's activity and connecting with those I care about.  I love focusing on beautiful things and celebrating that beauty by trying to capture it via art and photography...

I want more of this kind of living in my life!

I have a dream...

Since coming back to Myrtle Beach, I am dreaming a dream, and hoping that verbalizing the dream will help it to become a reality. I want to host a trip back to Tuscany and take others along with me!! Combining all the things I love: Travel, Great Food, Cooking, Wine, Art, Teaching, Friends, Music…what’s not to love, right?

I want my friends and students, and people I care about to experience what I experienced…peace and tranquility, beautiful scenery, making art on location, delicious food, great wines, bursts of joy, lots of laughter, new friendships, singing in the evenings, and a little adventure.  How could I not want to experience more of that? Why would I not want to share that?

Prerequisites if you would like to join me:

  1. A capacity for laughter
  2. A positive attitude
  3. Willingness to dwell on beautiful things and/or indulge others as they dwell on them
  4. A taste for farm-to-table organic foods and wines,
  5. Willingness to explore incredibly beautiful and wonderfully medievel Tuscan towns.
  6. Interest in  viewing art, learning about art, and/or making art through drawing, painting, and/or photography.  If you aren't an artist, then we'd require a willingness to indulge us when we talk about these things.  You can always choose those moments as an opportunity to take a walk, swim in the olympic size pool, grab a nap, read a book or take advantage of #7...
  7. Interest in Optional opportunities to cook with my favorite Tuscan chef, Andrea Anichini, If you are part of this trip, then any of us may cook with him whenever the schedule allows or the mood strikes...how fun will it be to learn a few of Andrea's Tricks of the Trade- Tuscan Style?! And yes...he is just as  FUNNY AS CHARMING AS THIS PHOTO IMPLIES! (He is also a sommelier!)
    Our Chef -Andrea Anichini
  8. Interest in Optional tours of local Tuscan wineries, viewing local art history sites and/or historical sites.  (These might be alternatives for artists and non-artists alike).
9. Enjoyment of being serenaded with Broadway tunes after dinner by Michaelino from Il Chiostro,

10.  Possibly making our own music if I can persuade Paul (my husband) to bring a guitar! Warning:  link to the following video is a little PG-13 Video link to Paul singing/playing "Wild Thing"  PS-- he doesn't know I'm posting that one!  lol
FYI- Paul will be joining us and along with his musical talents, he will bring his qualifications and experience as a physician...so we have a little medical back-up along with us should we need it.  =)

Please contact me if this trip sounds like something you would like to do. No obligations, but I will keep you informed if you contact me. I will need a minimum of 6 participants, and an initial non-refundable deposit of $500 to hold your spot.  I will cap the number to keep it manageable and friendly.  The dates for this trip are set for Sept 27-Oct 4 2014. I have developed an itinerary with Il Chiostro, (the organization who handled the trip I just took). I'm super excited about the plans and the towns we will visit.  I was able to choose my favorites!
My goals for this trip are as follows:

  1. Visit my favoriteTuscan hill towns and sample the views, the charm and the local food and wine
  2. Explore painting/drawing/photograpy on location with those interested in doing so
  3. Have the chance to visit a couple of vineyards to tour and learn about the agriculture and winemaking process, sample their wine and food,  and/or paint on location
  4. Give Art lessons on location and in the studio space at San Fedele for those who are interested
  5. Take advantage of multiple opportunities to cook with our chef, Andrea Anichini (he is a friendly, and vivacious guy as well as an incredible cook).
I will let those of you who contact me know about all the details first. Space is limited so let me know if you're interested! I’d love to hear from you and possibly have you join me for what is sure to be a memorable time in Tuscany Sept 27-Oct 4 2014.

Take a photo...then "Imagineer" Your Own Reality!

I am not a" great photographer.  I respect photographers and know that getting the right image is about planning, timing, study, readiness, equipment and technical savvy.  These days, it's also about editing know-how just as in the past it was also very much about dark-room know how.  Photography is art.  Photographs can be beautiful and complete as an art form. However, for me...photos are just the beginning.  That's why I am a painter.

Yesterday I was in Siena.  A town behind a massive wall on a hill...a description which could fit many towns in Tuscany.  This one has the distinction of being the owner of St. Catherine's head!  Oh, and her right finger too!  How grisly and medieval is that?  There she was today...what's left of her that is.  Not to disrespect her or anything, but as far as I'm concerned, cutting off her head and putting her decaying face in a box for all to see is not necessarily respectful  When I go, close the casket and remember me as I was.  She was very important to the residents of the city and they claimed her as their own...however when she died in Rome, they kept her remains as relics and charged for seeing them or being blessed by them.  Citizens of Sienna staged a guerrilla raid on Rome and chopped off her head...and her finger (how random!) and then brought them back in a box to her home town.  And here she is to this day...

Siena is very hilly and filled with old buildings, gelato shops, lots of tourists and beautiful little vistas wherever you look.  It's a great town to photograph and wander around, which is what we did today.  I was like a dog on the trail of a good scent...just following my nose (or in this case my eyes) from one thing to the next.  My new friend and roommate, Sally, was my partner in crime.  We stumbled upon a great site today with laundry on the line, shadows and cool architecture.  We stood there at the side of the road and drew it in our little pads...took photos and then kept on.

At one point Sally told me she had found a shopping mall.  I followed her in there and we saw lots of people but no shops.  We stumbled on some nice bathrooms, so we took advantage.  There were lots of bars to assist with mobility and pull chords for emergency on the walls...that should have been our first clue.  When we came out, we realized that there were all kinds of old people and nurses...Then it dawned on us...we had somehow found our way into a convalescent home!  We began laughing so hard and making fun of ourselves, but even so, I was taken with some of the cool faces and old people around us.  What was even more funny was that they weren't moving too fast, so it made taking their photos easier. I didn't feel comfortable taking obvious photos of the old folks, so Sally volunteered to stand in the vicinity of a couple of choice characters and I surreptitiously took these shots.

Photos are a very necessary part of my process.  They provide me with resources from which I can "imagineer" a painting.  For example, when we drew a spot on location I felt that it needed a point.  When you looked at the city landscape I had drawn, it didn't seem to have enough life for me.  I decided it needed people to give it some life.

It was time to use a photo reference.  I was taken by the story which was told in a photo I took earlier in the day.  The little boy blowing bubbles was interacting with an elderly man on the street.  Charming!  I decided that those two characters belonged in my drawing in order to remind me of my experience here.  They were not in the same place in the same time at all, but because I'm a painter, they ended up right where I wanted them to be.  Photos are the reference, but the fun for me is found in the the ability to create my own reality.

Finished Painting
"Bubble Boys"- Watercolor/Ink on Paper

As a PS to my previous entry...I found out that the very spot I climbed to get the photo below was a former celtic place of worship.  There are stone circles on this site and as I sat upon one of them I was visited by my little friend the fawn.  How cool is it to think that this ancient holy place gifted me with an innocent spiritual present?  That fawn symbolized innocence, vulnerability, and being present in that place.  I am even more convinced that he was sent as some sort of heavenly affirmation.  One more reason to love Tuscany!
